Volunteer Position: Site Assistant

Soar Detroit is seeking volunteer Site Assistants
who will serve as Soar ambassadors to students and others while helping with tasks
needed for the smooth operation of our tutoring program.

VOLUNTEER DUTIES

Greet, engage, and encourage students.
Interact with site staff and other volunteers in a gracious, professional manner.
Help with escorting students to and from the tutoring space.
Assist students with computer or internet issues as needed.
Assist with room setup and cleanup.
Help with other tasks as needed at the tutoring location and/or Soar office.

MINIMUM COMMITMENT

Once per week; 2-3 hours, depending on the site.
October-May; summer opportunities also.
Multiple sessions available at locations throughout Detroit.

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteers must complete background screening as required by the tutoring site.
Soar training on organizational policies and procedures.
Recommended: complete Soar Reading Mentor training.

What you need to know...

Who can mentor?

Anyone who wants to make a difference in a child's life. Remote mentors must be 18 years+. In-person mentors must be 14 years+.

Who will I mentor?

Kids who are behind in their reading and need a little extra help.

What's the commitment?

At least 1 hour per week through May. It’s a small commitment that yields huge results.

When & where will I mentor?

Soar will offer in-person and remote tutoring during the 22-23 school year. Sit with a student, or mentor online via Zoom from your home or office.
In-person mentors will need to follow Soar’s COVID prevention policy

How do I sign up?

Complete the registration form. We'll notify you about upcoming training sessions. A background check, which may include fingerprinting, will be required before you begin working with a student, but you will not be charged for it.
