For $39/month, you can cover the direct costs of mentoring an individual student in a school. These costs include providing tutoring materials, preparing lessons, and giving special treats throughout the year, such as a book to take home or a classroom celebration with food.
You are paired with a real child in a Detroit school. For privacy reasons, we cannot provide a child’s name or their picture. However, you can choose to sponsor the child that you mentor. You will be given information from the teacher and updates about the tutoring cohort.

In addition to your financial donation, you are also encouraged to support your sponsored child through prayer. You will receive updates about the progress of the cohort your child is a part of, both from the teacher and from Soar Detroit.

What is the Child Sponsorship Program?
For $39/month, you can cover the direct costs required to mentor an individual Detroit student. These costs include providing tutoring materials, preparing lessons plans, and giving special treats throughout the year, such as books to take home over the summer or a classroom celebration with snacks. You will be paired with a real child in a Detroit school. For privacy reasons, you will not be given the child’s name or picture. However, you can choose to sponsor the child that you mentor. You will be sent periodic updates from the child’s teacher about how the whole classroom is progressing, as well as communications from Soar. In addition to your financial donation, you are also encouraged to support your child through prayer.
How do I sponsor a child?
On our website you can create an auto-pay account for your monthly contributions. Please click on the “Sponsor a Child” tab and follow the instructions. Checks and credit cards are also accepted if that is your preferred method of payment.
Can I sponsor the child that I mentor?
Yes! Please let us know if you would like to sponsor the student you mentor. However, we ask that you refrain from discussing the sponsorship program with your mentee. Do not tell the child that you are sponsoring them. This may lead to confusion.
How long does the sponsorship last?
The sponsorship lasts for as long as you want, just email mara@soardetroit.com to unenroll. During the summer months, your sponsorship will help provide your child with books to take home, along with materials for parents to ensure children keep reading while not in school.
How will I be kept updated on the child I sponsor?
You will receive quarterly updates from your child’s teacher outlining the progress that the entire class has made. Again, for privacy reasons you will not be given updates specifically about your child but on the classroom as a whole. You will also receive monthly communications from Soar informing you of news regarding the organization overall. If desired, at the end of the school year you will be able to visit your child’s classroom with other sponsors on a designated Celebration Day and provide snacks for the children.
